Don’t let the demure, peaceful countenance of Our Lady J fool you. This composer, performer, arranger, pianist, and singer is a master of all her many trades. She calls her music Gospel. We call it a perfectly controlled whirlwind of style, skill, politics, and artistry.
What’s so deliciously treacherous about Our Lady J’s work is that it’s irresistible. She taps into something distinctly human and relentlessly moving whether it’s a clap-your-hands-and-scream-halellujah number with a choir of 16 and a full band or a reflective ballade with string quartet. You don’t even realize you’re taking communion with Our Lady J until it’s far too late.
And how does she do it? 20 years of classical training helps. So does being a child prodigy. By the time Our Lady J was in high school, she was at conservatory. Her humble start in New York City? Not so humble, accompanying the most important dance companies in the nation. And now, after a long road of both personal and musical transformations, she’s right here, with us.
Our Lady J has been a favorite of the underground music scene in NYC for some time. Consider this her ascension.
