Homophonic Ep. 9: Our Lady J

Our Lady J is a woman on a musical mission of biblical proportions.  This week on Homophonic, she takes her heavenly throne next to yours truly for a revival of some of her most popular works on stage and a look into the future of her special brand of catechism.

From her humble– but no less divine– beginnings as a pianist and composer at a conservatory for prodigy teens; to her time as an accompanist for the most famous dance companies in the word; to her foot-stomping, crowd-moving “Gospel Revivals” of edgy Out music, Our Lady J teaches us a little something about redemption.

When she’s not orchestrating her songs for a 16 piece chorus and making true believers out of New York’s most skeptical audiences of music lovers, just what is the Lady up to?  Planning her first European tour, of course!

All this plus a live performance of a jaunty new track called “The Timid Song” right here in the homostudio.

Watch her interview and learn your catechism right here!

Kristi goes Photophobic…

Posted by Alexander on July 10th, 2008

When Kristi stopped by the homostudio to tape her interview, she told us about a little known psychological condition called Photophobia– the fear of light.  It got us thinking about the many times we, as queer folks, have preferred to just stay in the dark than come into the sunshine (famous actors who take beard wives and have fake babies with them…we’re looking in your direction…).

At any rate, photophobia is more than just a great metaphor for being caught between exposure and self-denial.  It’s also a phenomenal new song that Kristi performed LIVE at our place.

The vocals alone will leave you breathless (we couldn’t BELIEVE how easily Kristi powered through never ending notes)…The piano by itself is a romping, stomping, gorgeous track.  Together…it’s pure Kristi magic.

Have a look and a listen for yourself:

Homophonic Ep. 8: Kristi Martel

Posted by Alexander on July 8th, 2008

Kristi Martel Kristi Martel is a one woman hurricane of music. This week on Homophonic, she brought all the forces of nature together when she sat down with us to chat about her music and play one of her most popular songs.

No stranger to controversy thanks to electrifying lyrics, Kristi starts by scandalizing the FCC with a new track from her forthcoming album Sacred Whore that uses every bad word there is the very best way.

And of course, Lee blockaded the door until she graced us all with an outstanding performance of her hit “Photophobia.”

(Super Homophonic Fun Fact: Kristi brought two friends along for the interview, the first is her goddess manager Kim. The second? Our old friend and hers Miss Deepa Soul. Could there BE a cooler peanut gallery?)
